A nessage from the newly-elected President of the Basenji Club of Canada, Cheryl Egerton...........
HELLO FROM ATLANTIC CANADA
It is that time again, a new year, and this year the Basenji Club of Canada will see some new strides in a new executive, an upgraded and improved Constitution and By-Laws, and a new Specialty Site for 2011 outside of Ontario and Western Canada.
As the newly-elected President of BCOC, I first would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who supported me in this, and to also acknowledge my opponent, Sue Wilcox, who is, and has been, a true supporter and worker for this National Body, and also to let you know I will work with all of you on a one-to-one basis, or as a group.
Thank you one and all!
The Basenji Club of Canada has been fairly long-standing in the present form. Prior to this, the former BCOC operated in the early 70’s, until the club disbanded in the early 80’s. During those times, this breed and its members/breeders and loyal followers really had no say or status with our parent club, the CKC. As a newly-reformed club in 1984, we have grown and established ourselves as very loyal and hardworking toward the interest, betterment, and improvement of our breed. It has been a learning curve with many pitfalls, but we have overcome most of them.
To this end, we have a National Specialty each year; we are very active in disciplines such as Racing, Lure Coursing, Agility, Rally, Obedience, and in Rescue, as well as being extremely competitive in Conformation. To those striving for excellence, I take my hat off to you all!
My term as president will be a big step for the club this year. We are in the midst of redoing our Constitution and By-Laws to bring them in line with today’s dog world. We also now have executive members from different parts of the country, and that is including our Directors. We have a very good Editor, Arlene Bacon, and a Magazine that is top quality and all of us must appreciate the time, work, and effort that goes into the production of such.
I would also like to make use of our web site more effectively and will contact Donald Parkes with some suggestions, and ask for some professional assistance in putting a new page up. I am suggesting these new pages: (A.) President’s Page, (B.) National Specialty Page, (C.) Contact page, (D.) guidelines for specialty brochure (printable) (E.) members page, (where each of you can send in items/articles, etc from time to time, as well as updating our editor on special issues). I also would like to have criteria for Live Members.
Our 2011 National will be held in Fredericton, N.B. at a beautiful and large outdoor site situated on the Saint John River. We are only minutes from downtown Fredericton with lots of things to see and do, should one have the time.
Our banquet will be held on site, which means no one has to leave their dogs unattended, unless going across the field means such. There are 36 on site trailer hookups (l8 full and l8 with power/water) along with that, for those of you bringing tents, you will have electricity in the field on an electrical pole. Your reservations for all of this will have to be with Judy Sowers, owner/proprietor of Caseys and that info will be given soon.
My intent on being President, is not to micro-manage everything that happens. This is your club and I want those of you with specific duties to do them unhindered, to be successful. To this end, please contact me privately with any concerns/suggestions, and together we will make this a great 2011.
Cheryl Egerton

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT RE-FANCONI LINKAGE TEST
Lynn Arrand wishes to inform the BCOC members and fellow Basenji
owners/breeders that Dr. Johnson has requested a temporary suspension of the
Fanconi linkage test so that he and his staff can concentrate on the
development of the direct Fanconi test. His laboratory will process
submitted linkage tests for samples submitted on or before December 20.
Requests for previously submitted samples will also be accepted until that
date. After December 20th, Dr. Johnson and his staff will concentrate their
efforts on the development of the direct Fanconi test. Blood samples received after December 20th will be processed and the DNA samples stored for later testing. The Fanconi test form on the Canine Phenome Project site will be removed on December 19, 2007. Unless the direct test is found earlier, the Fanconi linkage test will become available again in late February, 2008.
